Interior Design vs. Decor. Vintage vs. Retro. Have you ever thought of how certain words seem to creep up and overtake others in our collective vernacular? When people talk about design, it seems as though the vocabulary used evolves along with the general attitude the masses have toward design itself.
Once upon a time, if you had a space you wanted to re-do, you’d call yourself a decorator. But nowadays, that word has just fallen out of favor. It’s even a bit insulting. It’s called Interior Design. TLC, Bravo, and HGTV (among others) have helped speed along the most readily visible shifting diction trend with their glut of reality shows based around interior design. Designer Jer Thorp has plugged into the New York Times recently released API to chart and graph the trending of terminology as it appears in their newspaper (and presumably other publications) and has laid it out in a visually stunning overlapping bar graph.
Charting the growing preference for all kinds of word trends, not just those related to design, Thorp has really exploited the NY Times API to lay out some fairly simply data in a interesting and informative way, but perhaps what’s even more exciting is the potential.
